Online Living

This week is all about "Second life." It is an online based program where you create a character and interact with other people in this virtual world. It reminded me of the video game World of Warcraft. That is primarily a game where fighting is a major focus, however in Second life, it is used as a networking and communication medium. I am very interested to see how it works and who is currently on the network. I have never heard of this program before so it is all new to me.

I find it interesting that it is being used by businesses and their employees. I think it is a valuable tool that can be used by many different organizations and age groups. For example, fraternity's can hold meetings online or parents can hold PTA meetings from their living rooms. A major advantage to this is leaving yourself time for other things that fill your schedule. It never seems that there is enough time in a day to do all the things you planned to, so second life helps facilitate that.

I'm hesitant to say that SL can replace fraternity/sorority meetings or PTA meetings. What's the meeting protocol for SL?

I thought it was really interesting how Sue from SL showed the screen shot of one of their meetings. I wonder how one of those would work in real life.

I don't know about your fraternity meetings, but in my sorority - everyone talks over each other or everyone wants to have a say when there 60 some girls in one room. And we have meeting protocol, as I'm sure many other groups and organizations do.

I wonder what the protocol is or would be in the virtual network. Especially when your typing.

Unfortunately, most second life users do not use this as a tool for holding meetings, making money, etc.
I think Second Life users live in this virtual world to accomplish that which they cannot in real life, and this is a waste of time. I find it a little sad that people live their life in their room from their computer. They should probably go out in the real world and do things.

Second Life is not considered a game, but everyone seems to be reminded of video games when they first download and log in to the program. This is why I am skeptical on how it can be used for something as important as business meetings.

So did I. SL is so new to me and I didn't expect to use the virtual place on business purpose. When Sue showed us virtual team meeting screen shot, I though that was so cool.

Well, like collen said, it would be so hard to organize the meeting properly. Think that 30 people say something at the same time. omg. I would be horrible..
